Bad News For 'The Fantastic Four: First Steps': Another Marvel Flop?
The new superhero film received critical acclaim, yet it is performing poorly at the box office, raising concerns about its future.
Things are not going well for The Fantastic Four: First Steps. The Marvel film was praised by critics as a return to form for the studio, but it's quiet at the box office.
Last Friday, the superhero film only earned $11.7 million in the United States. That's 80% less than its first Friday a week before. And that’s a very bad sign.
If this continues, First Steps could turn out to be the third disappointment for the Marvel Cinematic Universe this year. Captain America: Brave New World underperformed with a box office total of $415 million and Thunderbolts* earned even less.
While Marvel films had previously done immensely well at the box office, there was even a time when the studio averaged $1 billion per film. Perhaps this is a sign that audiences have lost interest in the franchise.
But there is hope. The next Marvel film set to release is Spider-Man: Brand New Day. The web-slinger always performs highly at the box office. After that, we can look forward to a new Avengers film with Avengers: Doomsday.
While 2025 appears to be heading towards failure, 2026 may offer a solution.
