On This Day, 'Lilo & Stitch' Lands On Disney+

Fans of the beloved franchise can rejoice, as the live-action remake of 'Lilo & Stitch' will soon be available for streaming on Disney+, allowing everyone to enjoy this heartwarming tale from home.

Disney's latest live-action hit is now making its way to the small screen. The remake of Lilo & Stitch, which captivated audiences in theaters last summer, will be available on Disney+ soon. Fans won’t have to wait long: starting Wednesday, September 3, they can stream the film through the service.

The remake opened in May and became one of the biggest films of the year, raking in over $1 billion worldwide, holding the second spot globally, only behind Ne Zha 2.

Strong Box Office, Delayed Streaming Release

It’s noteworthy that Disney waited a full 103 days for the streaming release, a long interval compared to other films. For comparison, Snow White became available on Disney+ just 82 days after its theater debut. The reason seems simple: Lilo & Stitch continued to perform well at the box office, being the number one film for three consecutive weeks.

In July, the film was already available for digital purchase and rental platforms, but the release on Disney+ means viewers can now enjoy the film without any additional costs, as long as they have a subscription.

One Of The Year’s Biggest Films

Lilo & Stitch is one of the few live-action remakes from Disney that has resonated both with audiences and at the box office. The studio has already announced a sequel, and voice actor Chris Sanders, who brought Stitch to life back in 2002, is expected to return as a writer.

The interest in the franchise has also shown in the streaming realm: after the theatrical release, the original 2002 movie skyrocketed to the number one spot on Disney+, followed by spin-offs and sequels. It is expected that this new version will also perform well on the platform.

Disney's Strategy Changes With Each Film

The 103 days between cinema and streaming indicate that Disney is no longer tied to a single strategy. For films that underperform, such as Captain America: Brave New World, a quicker release follows. However, for box office successes like Lilo & Stitch, the studio appears to be intentionally waiting longer to maximize theater run earnings.

In a post-COVID market, where studios seek the right balance between box office and streaming, Lilo & Stitch illustrates that the old model still holds value. From September onwards, families around the world can relive the film from the comfort of their living rooms.
