When Does The Chilling Horror Sequel 'Black Phone 2' Hits Cinemas?

Next month, 'Black Phone 2', the highly anticipated sequel to 'The Black Phone', will debut in theaters across the world.

In 2021, the horror film The Black Phone, directed by Scott Derrickson, was released, with Derrickson collaborating with his frequent partner C. Robert Cargill on the screenplay. Now they return with the sequel Black Phone 2, set to hit theaters soon.

The idea for The Black Phone originated when Derrickson and Cargill adapted Joe Hill's short story of the same name. Derrickson struggled to come up with additional material to complement the short story, after which he turned his focus to other film projects.

Unexpected Hit

The film was on hold for several years, until Derrickson stepped down as director of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022) due to creative differences. He then used his childhood memories in the suburbs of Denver to further develop The Black Phone.

The Black Phone turned out to be an unexpected box office hit and received generally positive reviews. Its success led to the short film Dreamkill (2023), directed by Derrickson and written by him and Cargill, released as part of the anthology film V/H/S/85. And now comes the sequel Black Phone 2.

Cast

A large part of the cast returns for this sequel. Ethan Hawke, Mason Thames, Madeleine McGraw, Miguel Mora, and Jeremy Davies reprise their roles, with Demián Bichir and Arianna Rivas joining the cast.

Black Phone 2 takes place four years after the events of the first film, where Finney (Thames) was kidnapped by a serial killer known as The Grabber (Hawke). Finney, now 17 years old, is still struggling with the aftermath of his kidnapping.

Story

His sister Gwen (McGraw) begins having disturbing dreams where she is called by the black phone and sees visions of three boys being pursued at a winter camp called Alpine Lake.

Gwen discovers a deeper connection between The Grabber and their family's history, leading them to the camp during a storm. There, they uncover a devastating intersection between The Grabber and their own family history.

In Theaters

In August 2022, Derrickson and Hill confirmed that talks were ongoing with the studio about making a sequel. Derrickson cited the financial success of The Black Phone as one of the driving forces behind the project's development.

Hill mentioned that his inspiration for writing a sequel stemmed from the "iconic imagery" of The Grabber's masks. Black Phone 2 will premiere later this month at Fantastic Fest in the US and will be released in cinemas on October 17. In the meantime, you can of course watch The Black Phone.
