First Reviews Of 'Nuremberg': Russell Crowe As An Horrific Nazi Figure

The initial reviews for 'Nuremberg' highlight Russell Crowe's captivating performance and strong cast, while noting some critique around the content.

The film Nuremberg, starring Russell Crowe and Rami Malek in leading roles, delves into the aftermath of World War II and will hit theaters in November, but it had its premiere last weekend at the Toronto International Film Festival. What are the first reviews saying?

The film centers around the famous Nuremberg Trials, where high-ranking Nazis were held accountable for their war crimes. Lawyer Douglas Kelley attempts to determine whether these men can be deemed mentally responsible for their actions. Currently, there are six reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, four of which are 'Fresh'.

Strong Leading Roles

Matthew Creith from TheWrap particularly praises the cast. He describes Crowe's performance as Hermann Göring as intense and gripping. According to him, the film makes viewers both question and empathize with the horrors depicted. "Nuremberg benefits not only from Crowe's terrifying portrayal but also from the ensemble that allows for doubt and compassion."

Michael Rechtshaffen from The Hollywood Reporter is also positive about the acting performances. He calls it a powerful production with a strong lineup, led by Crowe, Malek, and Shannon. "With this collection of top actors, the film looks like a potential contender in the awards season."

Two Strong Performances

Pete Hammond from Deadline also emphasizes the acting work of Crowe and Malek. Crowe, according to him, dives deep into his complex role, while Malek stands out as Kelley, who forms the true moral core of the story. Hammond believes this may be among the strongest roles of their careers.

Owen Gleiberman from Variety is less impressed. He feels the film lacks sufficient insight into the psychological depths of evil. "What Kelley wants to explore is the nature of evil. But the movie fails in that regard."

A Little Wait Left

Nuremberg is set to be released in US cinemas on November 8.
