"Impossibly Good", Apple TV Surpasses Itself With This Breathtaking Science Fiction Series Scoring A Bizarrely High 9.1 On IMDb

Vince Gilligan's new series Pluribus on Apple TV delves into societal themes with sharp irony and thought-provoking commentary.

Vince Gilligan seems to be doing it again. After the immense success of Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul, he returns with Pluribus, a brand new series that is already a topic of discussion. Gilligan's stories have never been straightforward, but this project captures attention immediately with its mysterious premise. The series premiered on November 7 on Apple TV with the first two episodes.

In the story, we follow Carol Sturka, played by Rhea Seehorn, who previously broke through as Kim Wexler in Better Call Saul. She portrays a woman who, unlike everyone else, is immune to a pandemic of happiness sweeping the world. The central theme—a society on the verge of drowning in imposed positivity—draws directly from Gilligan's recognizable blend of absurdity and moral reflection.

The Creator Speaks

In a conversation, Gilligan does not spare the tech world: "Silicon Valley has ruined the world by reducing everything to algorithms and profit models." Thus, he makes it clear that Pluribus wants to be more than a conventional drama series; it serves as a mirror for the zeitgeist.

The production was kept under wraps for a long time. Apple had a strict embargo strategy, and the promotion remained intentionally vague, with just one sentence summarizing the concept: "The most unhappy person on earth must save the world from happiness." This setup, both ironic and intriguing, explains why the series is poised to gain cult status instantly.

Strong Start

The first reviews speak of a layered and astute beginning. "Gilligan proves once again that he poses grand questions with minimal means," writes an American critic. The series now boasts an impressive 9.1 on IMDb. It seems that Pluribus is joining the ranks of its predecessors; quirky, provocative, and impossible to ignore.
