After a season filled with tension, loss, and sacrifice, Squid Game season 3 ends with a surprising and emotional twist for Pink Guard 011, played by Park Gyu-young. Her character takes a dramatic turn in the finale as she makes a risky decision that will alter her own future as well as that of others.

In the third season, the story significantly revolves around the internal conflict of Kang No-eul, or Pink Guard 011. Once a soldier in the North Korean army, she joins the organizers of the deadly game hoping to earn money to find her abandoned daughter. Her connection with player 246, Gyeong-seok, a father competing to save his sick daughter, ultimately leads her to rebel against the system.

A chance at life

In an interview with Netflix, creator Hwang Dong-hyuk revealed why No-eul ultimately decided to leave the games behind. “She had almost completely lost her inner light. But a glimmer of hope and the urge to live awaken within her once again,” he said. According to Hwang, Gi-hun's ultimate act of self-sacrifice in the ‘Sky Game’ was the final straw that convinced her to give life another chance.

The series depicts No-eul being deeply affected as she reads in the archive that her husband and daughter may have died. However, Gi-hun restored her hope: “I wanted to show how she rises again, rekindles her will to live, and tries to embrace life anew,” Hwang stated.

Meaningful choice

Though the finale does not confirm whether No-eul actually finds her daughter, it does show how she releases her guilt. By undermining the system and saving someone, she discovers meaning in her choices.

Squid Game season 3 has been streaming on Netflix since June 27. The series consists of six episodes, but it is still unclear whether there will be a fourth season or even a possible spin-off.
