First Reviews Of 'The Old Guard 2': Watch Or Skip? The Latter Seems The Case…
‘The Old Guard 2’ has received mediocre reviews and seems to lack the charm of its predecessor, leaving fans disappointed.
In 2020, the 70 million dollar film The Old Guard debuted on Netflix, becoming a massive success. We waited five years for the return of the group of immortal warriors, with Charlize Theron once again in the lead role. What do critics say about The Old Guard 2?
The film once again revolves around a secret society of immortal mercenaries who travel the globe to save lives while trying to come to terms with their own past.
The Rotten Tomatoes score currently sits at 33%. Nick Schager from The Daily Beast is unimpressed, noting that even many scenes feel slow and tiring. "The story asks nothing of Theron and her fellow actors except endless, lackluster mourning."
Brian Orndorf from Blu-ray.com believes Mahoney lost the plot, asserting that the film struggles to bring together characters, subplots, and action. He concludes that the film "feels surprisingly lifeless and fails to match the fun of the original."
Joe Botten from Loud and Clear Reviews calls The Old Guard 2 a flat sequel with weak action, low stakes, and a lack of magic. He states that little remains of what made the first film appealing to the audience.
David Reddish from CBR offers a somewhat positive review, praising the cast, especially Ngô's role, and calls the presence of Thurman and Golding an enhancement. However, he states: "The chemistry is there, but unfortunately doesn't turn into gold anywhere."
Sherin Nicole from RIOTUS praises the ambitious story with global missions and existential drama. However, she feels the script lacks depth: "The film revolves around relationships and raw action, but it lacks the layers of the original."
