Netflix Abruptly Cancels Beloved Series After One Season
In a surprising turn of events, Netflix has canceled 'The Residence' after just one season, disappointing fans and viewers alike.
It seemed like a solid newcomer on Netflix, but The Residence is already cancelled after just one season. The streamer has halted the series before any news about a possible second season was announced. Once again, an ambitious drama series vanishes from the platform.
The Residence centered around the character Cordelia Cupp, played by Uzo Aduba. This quirky detective, with a fascination for birds, was tasked with solving a murder in the White House. The victim: head housekeeper A.B. Wynter, portrayed by Giancarlo Esposito.
The series featured a cast that included Randall Park, Ken Marino, Susan Kelechi Watson, and Isiah Whitlock Jr. Yet, despite the prominent names and the production team around Shonda Rhimes, it apparently failed to make a sufficient impression. The series received a respectable IMDb rating of 7.7.
Earlier this year, creator Paul William Davies expressed plans for a second season. “Cordelia is at the center of it all. There are plenty of stories possible with her, whether that’s again in the White House or somewhere else,” he said at the time. He hoped for a continuation, provided the audience showed enough interest.
However, that enthusiasm from the audience did not prove to be sufficient. Netflix is now pulling the plug on The Residence, despite the high expectations surrounding the concept. The series apparently could not compete against the current competition in the busy streaming landscape.
