You’ll Be Shocked To Hear Which Superhero Steven Seagal Nearly Played

Imagine a world where Steven Seagal plays a superhero alongside Jack Nicholson.

Can you imagine? Oscar winner Jack Nicholson, the man of many faces and characters, against a rising star with just one expression who always plays the same type?

In 1989 it nearly became a reality when the producers of Tim Burton's new Batman film actively lobbied to cast none other than actor Steven Seagal opposite Nicholson's Joker.

Tougher Appearance

Fans wanted a dark and serious incarnation after the campy TV series with Adam West, and there was significant resistance against Burton's choice, the then 38-year-old Michael Keaton, primarily known for comedies.

Seagal made his on-screen debut in the 1988 film Above the Law. His appearance was different from that of Stallone or Schwarzenegger, and with his fresh and unique fighting style, he caught the audience's attention.

Burton Stood Firm

We know how it ended, and in hindsight, we are glad about it, as Keaton has stolen our hearts. Because as Batman, Seagal would certainly have delivered convincing blows and kicks, but how wooden and emotionless would his Bruce Wayne have become?
