Disney+ Has A Massive Streaming Hit For Familiar Reasons

The Pixar film 'Elio' struggled in theaters but became a success on Disney+.

Pixar films have long been known for their packed theaters and impressive box office numbers. However, this has changed in recent years. The films are less often convincing audiences in theaters, but once released on streaming, they suddenly find a large audience again. We are witnessing this once more with Elio, a film that underperformed at the box office but has rapidly become a success on Disney+.

Elio tells the story of a boy who is unexpectedly abducted by aliens, which secretly fulfills his dream, and must then take on the role of ambassador for humanity. As an ambassador, he undertakes the dangerous task of speaking with Lord Gigron in order to remain with the aliens forever. This leads to unexpected friendships and requires a lot of courage. It was yet another Pixar production that resonates with both young and old.

In The Living Room

The audience is now massing on Disney+. According to statistics, Elio is now in first place on the platform's list of most-watched films. The film even surpasses the live-action remake of Lilo & Stitch, which had recently held the top spot. This shows that the film still finds its audience, just not on the big screen, but in the living room.

Importantly, Pixar is now part of Disney. Since the acquisition, all new films are also available on Disney+, providing a compelling alternative for many families. During the pandemic, this model was reinforced with titles such as Soul, Luca, and Turning Red debuting directly on the streaming service.

Pixar's Success

Thus, Pixar's success has not vanished, but shifted. Films like Inside Out 2 demonstrate that sequels can still rake in billions, while original stories often struggle to break through at the box office. However, those same titles do remarkably well on streaming services.

Regarding Elio, which began as a flop in theaters, it has proven to be an unexpected hit on Disney+. This confirms that Pixar films are still beloved; we just watch them differently these days.
