1.7 Million Subscribers Leave In A Bizarre Week, Huge Drama For This Major Streaming Service

In September, Disney lost 1.7 million subscribers due to Jimmy Kimmel and the announcement of price increases, significantly impacting their streaming services.

Disney faced a notable loss of subscribers in the third week of September. Journalist Marisa Kabas reported via Bluesky that from September 17 to 23, more than 1.7 million paid subscriptions were canceled. This involved customers from Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN, as confirmed by an internal source at the company.

According to that same source, this number is well above normal churn rates. The increase amounts to a 436 percent rise compared to the usual attrition. The timing coincided with the temporary halt of the talk show Jimmy Kimmel Live on ABC, a channel also owned by Disney. The program was paused on September 17 and resumed five days later.

Freedom Of Speech

The brief suspension led to national media attention. The debate was not only about entertainment but was mainly viewed as a matter of free speech. The previous comments by FCC Chairman Brendan Carr and pressure from network groups Nexstar and Sinclair played a role in this. A wave of calls to cancel subscriptions emerged on social media, sometimes followed by actual cancellations.

Besides the conflict surrounding Kimmel, another factor came into play. On September 23, Disney announced price increases for Disney+, sparking further discussion. This timing makes it likely that a portion of the cancelers will not return soon, even now that the show is back on air.

Strategic Timing

Kabas's source also suggested that Disney intentionally advanced the return of Jimmy Kimmel Live. The company was reportedly aware that the price increase would be announced that same week and wanted to avoid both developments generating excessive negative publicity at once. How significant the effect of this combination will be in the long term remains to be seen.

New Epic Miniseries By Mel Gibson Set To Outshine '300'

Mel Gibson is adapting an epic miniseries about the Great Siege of Malta in 1565, showcasing a remarkable historical battle.

Mel Gibson is about to bring history to the screen once again, this time with a story that matches the intensity and scale of 300. His new miniseries focuses on a true struggle known as one of the most incredible events in military history.

The film 300 from 2006, directed by Zack Snyder, was based on the comic by Frank Miller. It told the epic and spectacular story of 300 Spartan warriors fighting at Thermopylae against a massive Persian army. The film became a modern classic in the action and war genre.

The Siege Of Malta

Gibson now turns his attention to the Great Siege of Malta in 1565, where only 700 Knights Hospitaller faced off against an Ottoman army of 40,000 soldiers. This battle resulted in an unexpected victory for the knights, a story that not only sounds epic but is also a true account. This gives Gibson the opportunity to combine history with spectacle in a way that might surpass 300.

The success of 300 is evident: the film grossed over $454 million worldwide and was well-received by audiences. However, Gibson has the advantage of telling this true story in the form of a miniseries, allowing for more depth and multiple storylines. This increases the likelihood that his project could have a similar, if not greater, impact.

Highly Promising

In an interview, Gibson expressed his enthusiasm: “I’m working on a limited series about the Siege of Malta. It’s an incredible story, and there’s really only one place to film it: Malta itself.” He emphasized how stunning the historical locations are and called it “a crazy, but great story.”

When the miniserie will actually be released is still unknown. But it is certain that Gibson will do everything possible to make it a spectacular and epic tale.

Disney+ Has A Massive Streaming Hit For Familiar Reasons

The Pixar film 'Elio' struggled in theaters but became a success on Disney+.

Pixar films have long been known for their packed theaters and impressive box office numbers. However, this has changed in recent years. The films are less often convincing audiences in theaters, but once released on streaming, they suddenly find a large audience again. We are witnessing this once more with Elio, a film that underperformed at the box office but has rapidly become a success on Disney+.

Elio tells the story of a boy who is unexpectedly abducted by aliens, which secretly fulfills his dream, and must then take on the role of ambassador for humanity. As an ambassador, he undertakes the dangerous task of speaking with Lord Gigron in order to remain with the aliens forever. This leads to unexpected friendships and requires a lot of courage. It was yet another Pixar production that resonates with both young and old.

In The Living Room

The audience is now massing on Disney+. According to statistics, Elio is now in first place on the platform's list of most-watched films. The film even surpasses the live-action remake of Lilo & Stitch, which had recently held the top spot. This shows that the film still finds its audience, just not on the big screen, but in the living room.

Importantly, Pixar is now part of Disney. Since the acquisition, all new films are also available on Disney+, providing a compelling alternative for many families. During the pandemic, this model was reinforced with titles such as Soul, Luca, and Turning Red debuting directly on the streaming service.

Pixar's Success

Thus, Pixar's success has not vanished, but shifted. Films like Inside Out 2 demonstrate that sequels can still rake in billions, while original stories often struggle to break through at the box office. However, those same titles do remarkably well on streaming services.

Regarding Elio, which began as a flop in theaters, it has proven to be an unexpected hit on Disney+. This confirms that Pixar films are still beloved; we just watch them differently these days.
