"A Spectacle Of Unprecedented Scale"; The Film On Netflix Is Number 1 In 81 Countries

Netflix launches Troll 2, an epic Norwegian sequel filled with adventure and destruction.

A gigantic beast awakens once again in the Norwegian mountains, throwing the country into chaos. On December 1, Troll 2 premiered on Netflix, the sequel to the most popular non-English Netflix film ever. The film performs strongly on Netflix, achieving the number 1 spot as the most viewed film in 81 countries.

Netflix consciously opts to simply title the sequel Troll 2, without a subtitle or extra addition. The new film reunites director Roar Uthaug and screenwriter Espen Aukan, along with cast members Ine Marie Wilmann, Kim Falck, and Mads Sjogard Pettersen. According to the creators, the new film is bigger, funnier, and more adventurous than the original.

Great Danger In Norway

In the sequel, a new troll awakens, leading to destruction throughout the country. Nora, Andreas, and Captain Kris unite once again to stop the creature. They receive help from new allies and must delve into Norwegian history to understand the threat. The mission is their most dangerous yet, as the clock ticks and the devastation spreads.

Actress Wilmann describes returning to the Troll universe as "an honorable challenge", while director Uthaug promises the audience a "troll spectacle of unprecedented scale".

A Legacy Of Chaos

The name Troll 2 carries weight. The same name was once given to a cult flop that is now known as 'the worst movie of all time.' In 1990, a film with that title was released, which despite (or thanks to) its poor production values, grew into a cult classic. That film had no connection to its predecessor, contained no trolls, and was made by an Italian crew that barely spoke English. The bizarre dialogues, minimal budget, and incomprehensible plot earned it a unique place in film history.

The fascination with that version of Troll 2 even led to the documentary Best Worst Movie, in which lead actor Michael Paul Stephenson looks back at the production process and the unexpected cult status of the project.

Serious Sequel, Ironic Legacy

The Netflix version of Troll 2 disregards the irony of the name and opts for a serious sequel to an international success. The combination of spectacular CGI, Norwegian folklore, and a renewed sense of threat is intended to attract a new audience, while fans of the original return for more.
