HBO Max Embarrasses Itself With Legendary Blunder Surrounding This Epic Drama Series
The 4K version of Mad Men on HBO Max inadvertently features uncensored footage that was not meant for public viewing.
The long-awaited 4K version of Mad Men has been available on HBO Max since Monday, but the renewed debut is not without its flaws. Fans quickly discovered that an unedited version of the series was mistakenly uploaded, revealing crew members and technical equipment that are typically kept behind the scenes. Studio Lionsgate has confirmed that a corrected version will be available soon.
On social media, viewers shared footage from a scene in the episode Red in the Face (season 1), where a crew member is seen pumping fake smoke into the shot while actor John Slattery portrays his character Roger Sterling. There have also been reports of incorrect episode titles, although these have since been corrected.
According to those involved in the production, the wrong versions of the episodes were mistakenly delivered to HBO Max. These are rough versions without the final visual finishes, showing technical operations that should not be visible. The mistake is currently being rectified, although as of writing, the original footage with visible crew was still accessible on the platform.
The series, set in the advertising world of 1960s New York, is considered one of the most influential drama series of the past twenty years. Mad Men won the Emmy for Best Drama Series four consecutive times and received a total of 116 nominations.
With the arrival of the 4K version on HBO Max, Warner Bros. Discovery hopes to reintroduce the series to a wider audience. Royce Battleman, responsible for global content acquisition, described Mad Men at the announcement as “an iconic addition to the HBO Max catalog.” The series was previously only available in 4K through the American AMC+ and some free ad-supported platforms.
