The games that the film is based on have been among the most popular horror games in the world for years, but previous film adaptations (including Gans' own version from 2006) never became true blockbusters. However, the trailer for the new film is receiving notably positive reception.

According to Gans, this is exactly what he wants to embrace much more strongly with this new film. He himself states: "It will be a truer adaptation of 'Silent Hill 2', with practical effects and a focus on emotional horror".
The film follows the main character, James Sunderland, played by Jeremy Irvine, who returns to the mysterious town of Silent Hill after receiving a letter from his deceased loved one, Mary. His quest for answers leads him through grotesque monsters and the dark side of his own psyche.
