The Sci-Fi Mystery That Won’t Die: Is This Hit Series Actually Cancelled?

Behind the scenes, the story is just as interesting as the series itself.

Filmmaker Seth MacFarlane created the sci-fi series The Orville, which is both a parody of Star Trek and a tribute to the legendary production. The series began in 2017 and has to date three seasons, totaling 36 episodes.

MacFarlane is not only the writer but also the lead actor, yet he seems uncertain whether a fourth season will materialize. While he is definitely open to the idea, it appears to be practically challenging to get things off the ground. So far, no one knows if The Orville will return or not.

Sci-fi That Simultaneously Showcases The Everyday

The series offers a blend of adventure, drama, and the mischievous humor we are accustomed to from MacFarlane. His character, Edward "Ed" Mercer, is the captain of the U.S.S. Orville, a medium-sized spaceship exploring space for the Planetary Union in the 25th century.

However, for Ed, this is a significant step back in his career. After his divorce from his wife Kelly (Adrianne Palicki), who cheated on him with an alien man, Ed regularly showed up at work with a hangover. Therefore, it was irresponsible to have him at the helm of large spaceships.

Consistent Rumors Without Confirmation

The adventures of Ed and his crew remain popular, despite the fact that the third season was already released in 2022. The Orville found its shape and offered solid overarching storylines that MacFarlane managed to conclude in surprising ways. With ongoing online speculation and no official announcements, the future of the series has turned out to be the biggest mystery.

Contributing factors include MacFarlane's busy schedule, especially when you consider that he wants to write all the episodes himself. Additionally, coordinating the schedules of the lead actors is not always easy. Meanwhile, the U.S.S. Orville floats in a metaphorical black hole, much to the disappointment of fans.

Where To Watch The Series?

You can stream all three seasons of The Orville on Disney+.
