'Alien: Earth' And 'Blade Runner 2099' Kick Off Major Plans!

Scott Free Productions is embarking on an exciting journey to adapt classic films into modern TV series, expanding the legacy of the Scott brothers.

With the upcoming release of Alien: Earth on Hulu / Disney+ and the Amazon Prime series Blade Runner 2099, a new television era seems to be emerging for the legacy of Ridley and Tony Scott. According to David W. Zucker from Scott Free Productions, this is just the beginning of a series of adaptations of films from the brothers’ oeuvre.

Zucker, Chief Creative Officer of Scott Free, indicated during the Monte-Carlo Television Festival that for the first time in his 24-year career at the production house, titles from the Scott brothers are being adapted into TV series. In addition to the aforementioned projects, other films by the duo are currently being considered for possible adaptation for the small screen.

New Opportunities

The shift in the landscape of studios and streaming services plays a significant role here. Increased investments in television, decreasing costs of visual effects, and the ability to delve into complex stories make it more attractive than ever to convert classic films into modern TV series. "It starts with the question of a project's raison d'être," Zucker explains. "Even though the familiarity of the title plays a role, it must also make sense content-wise."

One of the hurdles with these adaptations is securing rights. Close collaboration with the involved studios is essential, but according to Zucker, there are several interesting projects in the pipeline. He expects to have more clarity by the end of summer regarding which titles will actually move forward.

Other Projects

Not every potential adaptation is being developed by Scott Free. For instance, the series based on Man on Fire, originally directed by Tony Scott, is in the hands of Netflix and New Regency. That series is based on the original book, hence Scott Free is not involved in the project.
