Johnny Depp Strikes Back With 4-Letter Word: Delay From 'Fantastic Beasts' Hit Hard

Johnny Depp's departure from the Grindelwald role reflects the ongoing turmoil surrounding him.

Johnny Depp seemed to have secured a major role when he joined Warner Bros. and Fantastic Beasts in 2016. Unfortunately, the fairy tale ended a bit short after accusations of domestic violence surfaced. Following his lost defamation case against The Sun, which labeled him a "woman beater", it was 'exit' for the actor.

Depp was meant to play the dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald in the five planned films of Beasts. He made a cameo at the end of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. However, the situation escalated when Amber Heard repeated her earlier allegations around the release of The Crimes of Grindelwald (2018) and The Sun exacerbated the case.

Forced Departure

In an interview, the actor reflects on his exit from The Secrets of Dumbledore. While it was previously reported that he stepped down voluntarily, Depp reveals that he was asked to leave by the studio. This essentially means he was fired. He had already filmed three scenes in London.

Depp describes the moment as follows: "They [Warner Bros.] said: we want you to resign. But what I really thought was: they want me to retire. F*** you. There are way too many versions of me to destroy. If you think you can hurt me worse than I already am, you are mistaken."

Hefty Payout

A small consolation is that Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore with Mads Mikkelsen as his replacement, flopped hard. This seems to mark the near end of the spin-off series. However, thanks to a clause in his contract, the actor received a payout between 10 and 16 million dollars.
