This Film Is Now Considered A Classic, But Was Thoroughly Panned Upon Its Release

The prequel to a beloved iconic series was heavily criticized upon its release, but it is now viewed differently.

That we consider a film a classic today does not mean it was well received upon its initial release. Films like Blade Runner and The Thing are examples of films that were outright disliked by critics. In this article, we explore a significant David Lynch film that was polarizing at the time of its release.

The film in question is Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me, the prequel film to Lynch and Mark Frost's legendary 90s series.

Story

The film begins with a prologue featuring 'Special Agents' Chester Desmond (Chris Isaak) and Sam Stanley (Kiefer Sutherland) investigating the murder of young Teresa Banks on assignment from Gordon Cole (David Lynch). In this segment, we also see iconic characters Dale Cooper and Albert Rosenfield, played by Kyle MacLachlan and Miguel Ferrer. The enigmatic Philip Jeffries (David Bowie) makes his debut as well.

After the prologue, we return to the town of Twin Peaks. This section depicts the tragic final week of Laura Palmer's (Sheryl Lee) life. Palmer's murder is the catalyst for the original series.

Booed

Fire Walk With Me premiered at the Cannes Film Festival. According to Lynch, the film was booed at the festival. Notable critics like Roger Ebert and Janet Maslin called the film "shockingly bad" and "pathologically unpleasant".

The Twin Peaks series ended with a huge cliffhanger. Fans were disappointed that Fire Walk With Me offered no answers to their many questions about the series. Furthermore, the film was controversial due to its realistic depiction of sexual abuse.

The Return

Since then, the film has been rediscovered and is now regarded as an essential work by Lynch. Lynch and Frost got the chance to create a third season in 2017, titled Twin Peaks: The Return.

Events and characters from Fire Walk With Me proved to be significant in this new chapter, beautifully bringing the entire Twin Peaks saga together.
