This Expensive Sci-Fi Film Was One Of The Biggest Box Office Flops Worldwide Eighteen Years Ago
Even the talents of Daniel Craig and Nicole Kidman could not save this adaptation from failure.
Every year, films with sky-high budgets flop dramatically at the box office, regardless of the film's quality. This applies to several films released this year, such as Mickey 17, Black Bag, and The Running Man. In 2007, the science fiction film The Invasion by Oliver Hirschbiegel was one of the biggest flops.
In 2007, several films with hefty budgets failed miserably, such as Evan Almighty, Next, and Southland Tales.
Washington D.C.-based psychologist Carol Bennell (Nicole Kidman) and her colleague Dr. Ben Driscoll (Daniel Craig) are the only two people on Earth aware of an epidemic plaguing the city.
They discover an alien virus aboard a crashed space shuttle that transforms anyone exposed to it into emotionless drones while they sleep. Carol realizes that her son holds the key to stopping the spread of this plague, and she rushes to find him before it's too late.
The Invasion is the fourth adaptation of The Body Snatchers by Jack Finney. Two now-iconic adaptations, both titled Invasion of the Body Snatchers, were released in 1956 and 1978 respectively. In 1993, director Abel Ferrera also released his version, simply named Body Snatchers.
Warner Bros. was dissatisfied with the final result that director Oliver Hirschbiegel delivered, so the Wachowskis (The Matrix) were recruited to partially rewrite the script. Director James McTeigue was brought on to oversee the reshoots.
All these efforts turned out to be unnecessary, as the film was still poorly received, evident in its box office performance. The production budget ranged between 65 and 80 million dollars, but it only grossed 40 million at the worldwide box office.
