'Stranger Things: Tales From '85'! Netflix Surprises With Completely New Series: But When Is It Set?

Netflix has officially shared the first footage of the animated series 'Stranger Things: Tales From '85', premiering on the streaming service in 2026.

Netflix has released the first footage and a teaser for the animated series Stranger Things: Tales From '85, which is set to debut on the streaming service in 2026. This spin-off is set between seasons 2 and 3 of Stranger Things and focuses on the students of Hawkins with an all-new voice cast.

The official intro text reads: "Welcome back to Hawkins in the bleak winter of 1985, where the original characters must battle new monsters and unravel a paranormal mystery plaguing their town in Stranger Things: Tales From '85, a brand-new animated series." The teaser confirms that the timeline links directly to the events between the second and third seasons of Stranger Things.

New Voice Cast and Setting in 1985

The main roles are voiced by Brooklyn Davey Norstedt (Eleven), Jolie Hoang-Rappaport (Max), Luca Diaz (Mike), Ej (Elisha) Williams (Lucas), Braxton Quinney (Dustin), Ben Plessala (Will), and Brett Gipson (Hopper). Additionally, Odessa A'zion, Janeane Garofalo, and Lou Diamond Phillips have joined the voice cast. Eric Robles serves as showrunner, with Matt and Ross Duffer serving as executive producers, alongside Hilary Leavitt from Upside Down Pictures, and Shawn Levy and Dan Cohen from 21 Laps.

In the teaser, the Duffer brothers stated: "When we started talking about whether we wanted to do anything else with Stranger Things, this was one of our first ideas. The concept was to evoke the feeling of an '80s cartoon. With animation, there are virtually no limits. Eric and his team can really let loose, and they have done so."

"In a New Way"

Eric Robles adds: "What we’ve been able to capture is the magic of Hawkins in a new way. Our story takes place between seasons 2 and 3, but soon we learn that nothing is as we thought. So grab your flashlight and backpack, because it’s going to be awesome." The animated series Stranger Things: Tales From '85 is slated for next year on Netflix.
