The battle is not over yet for Last Samurai Standing. Netflix has confirmed that the Japanese action series will receive a second season, bringing back the main character Shujiro Saga, also known as Kokushu the Manslayer, in a new chapter of the deadly game Kodoku.
The series revolves around a once undefeated samurai who joins a ruthless survival game to save his family. According to creator and director Michihito Fujii, the script for the second season has been approved. "The idea that we can continue to build on this project gives me goosebumps," says Fujii. Main actor Junichi Okada, who is also working as a producer and fight choreographer, adds: "I am eager to dive back into this world and collaborate with the team on an even more intense season of episodes."
Worldwide Success For Japanese Production
Last Samurai Standing is based on the novel Ikusagami by Shogo Imamura and became an instant hit upon release. The series topped the charts for four consecutive weeks in Japan and reached the Netflix Top 10 in 88 countries around the world. Notably, it was also nominated for Best Foreign Series at the Critics' Choice Awards, a first for a completely Japanese production.
Junichi Okada aimed to create a new type of costume drama with a strong focus on action and an international appeal. Given the global reach and critical acclaim, it seems he has succeeded in that endeavor.
New Phase In The Deadly Game
At the end of season 1, the Kodoku battle was still ongoing. Only a few warriors remain, including Shujiro and Futaba Katsuki (Yumia Fujisaki). They travel to Tokyo, where a new phase in the game awaits them, and where the true organizers may be revealed.
