Unstoppable: This Netflix Hit Just Had the Biggest Opening Week in Streaming History
The launch of the fifth and final season of Stranger Things has left a major mark.
According to the latest Nielsen figures, the first-week total for season five amounted to 8.46 billion minutes watched between November 24 and 30. This marked the highest weekly viewing volume ever for a streaming title. The previous record was also held by Stranger Things, which reached 7.2 billion minutes during the premiere of season four in 2022.
Nielsen?
Nielsen is an international measurement agency that tracks the viewing and listening behavior of American consumers. The company collects data on television and streaming through panels, digital measurements, and statistical models and is considered an important benchmark for the reach and success of programs in the media industry. In the United States, Nielsen figures are the standard by which broadcasters, streamers, and advertisers assess their performance.
A direct comparison with season four remains difficult due to the differing release schedule. Season five premiered on Wednesday evening, while season four was launched on Friday morning at the time. Nevertheless, the difference is clear. Three years ago, the count after the first three days was 5.14 billion minutes, and the record was only reached after a full week.
Outlook on the finale
With new episodes planned for Christmas and New Year's Eve, Netflix expects high viewership numbers again.
