The New 'Frankenstein' Movie Releases On This Day In Cinemas
Starting next month, you will be able to see Guillermo del Toro's new 'Frankenstein' film in theaters.
Doctor Victor Frankenstein and especially his monster is one of the most famous and most filmed characters. Many films have been made in the last few decades about this monster and its creator, and next month the next one will be released.
Frankenstein is written and directed by Guillermo del Toro, based on the 1818 novel by Mary Shelley. The film is set in a drama/horror setting where the brilliant but egotistical scientist Dr. Victor Frankenstein brings a creature to life, ultimately leading to the destruction of both creator and creation.
The cast includes Oscar Isaac, Jacob Elordi, Mia Goth, Felix Kammerer, Lars Mikkelsen, David Bradley, Lauren Collins, Charles Dance, and Christoph Waltz. Del Toro has wanted to make a film about Frankenstein since 2007.
He stated back then that a project he would "do anything to make" would be a faithful "Miltonian tragedy" version of Frankenstein. In 2023, Del Toro finally got to work on this project when Netflix gave him a contract for several projects.
Del Toro spoke about his inspiration for making the film: "It was a religion for me. Since I was a child - I was raised very Catholic - I never quite understood the saints. And when I saw Boris Karloff on screen, I understood what a saint or a messiah looked like."
"So I have followed the creature since my youth, and I have always waited for the film to be made under the right circumstances, both creatively, to achieve the scope needed to make it different, and on a scale where you could rebuild the whole world."
The film had its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival on August 30, 2025. Next month, Frankenstein will be released in theaters on October 17 in the US. It will then also be released on Netflix on November 7.
Frankenstein has already received positive reviews, currently holding a score of 81% on Rotten Tomatoes.
