Despite its success, Syfy canceled the series after three seasons. Fans protested the cancellation and gathered over 100,000 signatures for an online petition. They lobbied Amazon Studios and Netflix to greenlight a fourth season.

Amazon Prime Video picked up the series for a fourth season, which was released in 2019. Ultimately, Amazon extended The Expanse with a fifth and sixth season. The sixth and final season premiered in 2022.
