Disney's 13-year-old Science Fiction Flop Makes A Surprising Comeback
The revival of 'John Carter of Mars' under Michael Kogge promises to breathe new life into this classic story that many fans have missed.
John Carter is one of the iconic science fiction heroes of the twentieth century. He was first introduced in short stories and novels by Edgar Rice Burroughs in 1912. He later appeared in comic form.
New Format
John Carter is now being transformed into an animated series with showrunner Michael Kogge at the helm. He has indicated that the series will have a sort of anime style and will be similar to Netflix series like Castlevania, Blood of Zeus, and Twilight of the Gods.
John Carter of Mars follows an American war veteran who is mysteriously transported to Mars. Here he becomes embroiled in conflicts among various civilizations. Thanks to his earthly physique, he gains powers that help him assist the planet and his new allies in their fight for survival.
Major Inspiration
The story has been a significant source of inspiration for much science fiction over the past century. George Lucas cited it as a major influence on his creation of Star Wars.
Despite its considerable influence, only a few attempts have been made to bring Carter's stories directly to the screen. Disney's John Carter from Mars starring Willem Dafoe was a critical and commercial failure.
Details Coming Soon
It is still unknown on which platform the series will appear, but more details are expected later this week. John Carter of Mars is currently available on Disney+.
