This Is The Most Expensive Series Ever Made After 'Lord Of The Rings: Rings Of Power', Prime Video Paid 300 Million Dollars For A Failed First Season, Yet A Second Season Is On The Way!

Citadel is set to return in 2026 for its second season despite the lukewarm reception of the first season.

The future of Citadel, once Amazon's most expensive spy series, seemed uncertain after a poorly received first season. Following an internal restructuring at Amazon MGM Studios, there were fears that the project would be canceled. However, it has now been confirmed that Citadel will return in 2026 for a second season.

The production of Citadel, developed by the Russo Brothers, cost Amazon 300 million dollars, making it the second most expensive season of a series of all time, but it did not achieve the expected success. Season 1 received mixed reviews, garnering a meager 51% score on Rotten Tomatoes and a 6.2 on IMDb. Nonetheless, the show managed to attract enough viewers worldwide to justify a sequel.

Spin-offs Canceled

The previous cancelation of the planned spin-offs Honey Bunny and Diana was not entirely unexpected. Both productions faced rising budgets and delayed filming. By merging these spin-offs into the second season, Amazon aims to consolidate the franchise into one international story set in India, Italy, and Brazil. The new season is set to premiere worldwide in the second quarter of 2026.

The storyline of season 2 takes place one month after the events of the first season. Citadel agents Nadia (Priyanka Chopra-Jonas) and Mason (Richard Madden) are in hiding as they are pursued by Manticore. They must team up with a new group of spies to stop a threat posed by billionaire Paulo Braga, who possesses dangerous technology.

Watch

With a focus on one central storyline, Amazon aims to turn the tide after a costly, troubled start. Whether Citadel can capitalize on its second chance will be revealed in 2026. You can still watch Season 1 on Prime Video.
