Expensive Apple TV+ Original Of $160 Million Is Almost Forgotten By Everyone

This high-budget film starring Will Smith faced disappointing reviews and reactions.

In recent years, we have seen streaming services willing to invest staggering amounts in their film productions. Netflix is the king of this approach with movies like Red Notice and The Gray Man, but Apple TV+ is also making its mark. One of the most expensive Apple productions is the Will Smith film Emancipation.

The historical thriller directed by Antoine Fuqua (Training Day) carries a price tag of approximately 160 million dollars.

Story

Emancipation tells the poignant story of Peter (Smith), a man who escapes from slavery. He relies on his intelligence, unwavering faith, and deep love for his family to evade cold-blooded hunters and the merciless swamps of Louisiana during his quest for freedom.

The film is inspired by the photographs of "Whipped Peter" taken in 1863 during a medical examination by the Union army, which first appeared in Harper's Weekly. One image, known as "The Scourged Back," showing Peter's bare back scarred by the whip lashes from his enslavers, ultimately contributed to the growing public resistance against slavery.

Extremely Expensive

Producer Joey McFarland began researching the story of Whipped Peter in 2018 and hired William N. Collage to write the script. Two years later, the film Emancipation was announced.

Apple paid 130 million dollars for the rights to the film. The production costs amounted to approximately 160 million dollars. The total cost was therefore at least 290 million dollars, an amount mostly spent today on franchise films.

Not Very Memorable

Apple clearly had high expectations for this collaboration between Smith and Fuqua, but unfortunately, the end result did not resonate well with critics and audiences. A major point of criticism is how the film portrays the intense, true events that inspired the poignant story. The consensus on Rotten Tomatoes states: "Emancipation works as an action film but stands in stark contrast to the uncomfortable way real events are treated that inspired the poignant story."

It Took Three Years To Make 8 Episodes Of 'Wednesday', Why Did It Take So Long?

The long production time of 'Wednesday' was due to various factors including location changes, strikes, and complex visual effects.

Three years of waiting for eight episodes remains a frustrating reality for fans of Wednesday. However, creators Alfred Gough and Miles Millar emphasize that this lengthy production time was not merely a choice, but a consequence of circumstances and the way the series is made.

According to the showrunners, the delay had multiple causes. The production had to move from Romania to Ireland, and the writers' strike played a role as well. Additionally, the high standard of visual effects takes significantly more time than in other series.

Writing And Looking Ahead

Nonetheless, this does not mean that the third season will take as long to arrive. Gough has indicated that work is currently underway in the writers' room for Season 3. "We are quite far along in the preparation, although the focus is currently on the launch of Season 2", the creator said. This suggests that development on the follow-up will not take years to get started.

Another point of interest is the involvement of Tim Burton. He directed half of the episodes in the first two seasons. According to Millar, his return completely depends on his schedule. "He loves working with the cast, but it remains to be seen whether he is available", he explained.

Comparison To Smallville

The comparison to their previous work Smallville shows just how significant the difference is. While over twenty episodes were filmed in nine months back then, it now takes just as long to make only eight episodes of Wednesday. Millar emphasized that 18 months is really the minimum needed to get a new season ready from filming to release.

Right now, there is a vigorous search for the new James Bond. The upcoming 26th film in the series is directed by Denis Villeneuve (Dune), and the latest we heard is that he is looking for a younger actor.

That doesn't stop 72-year-old Pierce Brosnan from throwing his hat in the ring. The actor was Bond in the 1990s, making his first appearance in GoldenEye.

Older Bond

In an interview with Radio Times, he says he is closely following the casting news about Bond. Then he states: "I don't think anyone wants to see a rugged, 72-year-old Bond, but if Villeneuve had something in store, I would jump at it instantly."

Brosnan makes it clear that this is a joke, but he continues to elaborate: "Why not? It's great entertainment. It could be really funny. Bald wigs, prosthetics... Who knows?"
