Netflix's Unexpected Hit Now Conquers Theaters: Is This The Film That Transforms Streaming?

Netflix is surprising everyone with its new cinema release, marking a significant shift in strategy.

While theaters are experiencing a quiet late summer, an unusual duel unfolds at the box office this weekend. Weapons, the horror hit of the year, easily maintained its top position, but the big surprise could very well come from KPop Demon Hunters.

Chances are you’ve heard of this film already. KPop Demon Hunters has been available on Netflix for some time and is a massive hit for the streaming giant. They decided to release a special 'sing-along' version of the animated film in over 1700 theaters, which has proven to be a major success.

Remarkable Figures

This is quite remarkable, considering KPop Demon Hunters has been on the streaming service for over two months. In that time, it has even grown to become the second most viewed film ever on Netflix.

However, there is a strong desire among fans to experience the colorful musical on the big screen. The choice for a wide theatrical release is also surprising, as Netflix has largely ignored theaters in recent years.

Other Strategies?

Earlier this year, the CEO of the streaming service referred to the movie theater experience as 'outdated.' It was also revealed that the new Knives Out sequel, Wake Up Dead Man, will barely be shown in cinemas.

The timing for the release of KPop Demon Hunters is indeed clever. With little competition and a strong fanbase, the animated film could very well win the weekend against Weapons. This would not only score Netflix a box office success but also force them to reevaluate their image of the 'outdated' cinema experience.

Third 'Knives Out' On Netflix Comes With "an Impossible Case"

'Wake Up Dead Man' features a complex murder mystery, directed by the talented Rian Johnson.

In December, we will receive a new Knives Out on Netflix. Writer/director Rian Johnson hinted earlier that the film is "totally different" from the first two installments.

Now he delves a bit deeper into it. In a conversation with Empire, he reveals that the film, titled Wake Up Dead Man, revolves around a church, featuring a murder that he describes as "magnificent".

Big Mystery

"The way the murder presents itself is [like] an impossible case," Johnson states. "Blanc [played by Daniel Craig] enters as a rationalist who wants to prove the opposite."

He continues: "Blanc has the biggest personal arc in this film. He must approach the mystery differently [than before]. (...) We had a lot of fun with it."

Star-Studded Cast

Wake Up Dead Man also features roles for Josh O'Connor, Glenn Close, Josh Brolin, Mila Kunis, Jeremy Renner, and many more. The film premieres on December 12 on Netflix.

'Dune' Actor Doesn't Want To Be The New James Bond: "To Be Honest..."

Austin Butler believes that James Bond should remain a British character, and he feels he isn't the right fit for the role.

Every film enthusiast has known for years that Daniel Craig will not be returning as James Bond. He was last seen as beloved 007 in No Time to Die, leaving the search for a replacement underway. However, one major actor has zero interest in the role.

Many names have been suggested, such as Idris Elba and Henry Cavill, but both may be considered slightly 'too old', especially since rumors suggest a younger Bond would perfectly fit a reboot to last longer.

Other Names

As a result, younger actors are being mentioned more frequently, including Austin Butler. The 34-year-old actor has already made a name for himself in Elvis, The Bikeriders, and Dune: Part Two, and is seen as one of Hollywood's greatest talents.

It's not surprising that many film fans see him as a viable 007 option, especially since Dune director Denis Villeneuve will be taking on the new Bond blockbuster. But what does Butler think about this himself?

Reaction

In a recent interview, Butler stated: "I am a huge fan of everything Denis is involved with, but I haven't heard anything about a James Bond project. To be honest, I don't think I'm the right choice for this".

"I'm American. Of course, I could imitate an English or British accent, but in my opinion, that goes 'against the rules.' Bond is simply a Brit. I would love to play a villain, though. I'm definitely open to that!"

No Thanks

This isn't the first time a major star has turned down the role. Other actors who have previously expressed their lack of interest include Glen Powell (due to his American roots), Theo James (who feels hesitant), and Taron Egerton (who believes he isn't the right person to take over the mantle).

The New 'Harry Potter' Reacts For The First Time To Casting In His Dream Role: ''surreal''

Actor Dominic McLaughlin has taken on the iconic role of Harry Potter, succeeding Daniel Radcliffe in the beloved series.

When in the spring of 2023 HBO announced that they were starting a completely new adaptation of the Harry Potter books by author J.K. Rowling, many fans had one burning question: who will play the legendary wizarding student?

Earlier this year, the world got an answer to that question: Dominic McLaughlin was announced as the new Harry Potter. The Scottish actor is now the successor to Daniel Radcliffe, who played the role from 2001 to 2011 in the films.

Dominic McLaughlin

A role like Harry Potter comes with immense pressure, and the young actor has thus far been kept away from the media. Recently, however, he appeared for the first time on the BBC Newsround camera to share his experiences with his brand new fans.

The BBC asked him how it felt to wear the wizard's costume for the first time. ''A bit surreal, to be honest. I was always a huge Harry Potter fan when I was younger,'' said the actor, who is now 11 years old. ''It is sort of the dream role, of course. So I am extremely excited to be doing this.''

2027

We will see how McLaughlin fares in the role in just over a year. The Harry Potter series is currently being filmed in England. Season 1 will premiere in 2027 on HBO Max.

War, Giant Sharks And Explosions: 'Beast Of War' Has It All

The upcoming movie promises an exhilarating blend of war drama and monstrous terror.

Fans of war stories and monster films have something to look forward to with Beast of War. This film combines both aspects of classic war drama with the nerve-wracking threat of a bloodthirsty shark.

The movie is directed by Kiah Roache-Turner, known for Wyrmwood: Road of the Dead and Sting. His latest tale is set during World War II.

Disaster

At its center is a group of young Australian soldiers who lose their ship to a Japanese air raid in 1942. The survivors cling to a lifeboat in the ocean, hoping for rescue.

However, their struggle for survival takes a terrifying turn... The soldiers are pursued by a giant white shark, which circles hungrily around their raft, waiting for the perfect moment to strike.

Historical Basis

The film is loosely based on the sinking of the HMAS Armidale, where countless lives were lost. The director has previously stated that a life-size shark model weighing over half a ton was primarily used in production.

Beast of War premieres on October 9 in Australia and hits U.S. theaters and VOD platforms on October 10.
